Last year, voters determined the greatest American band (R.E.M.)
This year, you can help decide which ‘70s album reigns supreme. Starting Feb. 1 and running through April 8, vote in head-to-head matchups between two albums on our Facebook page: facebook.com/suburbspod. We’ll have new matchups daily, except for breaks between rounds.
How we chose the albums:
All were released in the United States between Jan. 1, 1970 and Dec. 31, 1979. (Sorry, “London Calling,” you’re an ‘80s album.)
We did not consider:
- Greatest hits albums of previously released material. (“Singles Going Steady” made the list because, while it’s a compilation of U.K. singles, those recordings had not been previously released in the U.S.)
- Live albums. (They also feature previously released songs.)
Criteria for the field of 64:
- Popularity
- Critical acclaim
- Impact/influence
- Lasting appeal (“stands the test of time”)
We’re sorry if some albums you love didn’t make the field of 64. Many great recordings missed the cut. Hard decisions had to be made.
And now, let the madness begin.
